Description
Delightful candied orange slices that add a sweet, zesty flavor and a stunning touch to any dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 small oranges
- 12 cups water, divided
- 3 ½ cups granulated sugar, divided
- ½ cup granulated sugar (for coating)
Instructions
- Wash the oranges thoroughly. For easier slicing, freeze the oranges for about 30 minutes.
- Slice the oranges into 4-5mm thick slices using a mandoline or a sharp knife.
- In a medium pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil. Boil the orange slices for 2 minutes, then transfer them to an ice bath.
- Discard the boiled water. In the same pot, combine 6 cups of water and 3 cups of sugar. Bring to a boil and then add the orange slices.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- When the slices are slightly translucent, remove them using a slotted spoon and place them on a drying rack.
- Let the slices dry at room temperature for about 18 hours until they feel sticky, not wet.
- Once dried, toss the slices in ½ cup of granulated sugar until coated. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge.
Notes
Try using brown sugar for a deeper flavor or add cinnamon/vanilla to the syrup for unique twists. Consider drizzling the slices with melted chocolate for an extra treat.
