This Vegan Orange Chicken using tofu is a crispy, tangy delight that offers a comforting twist on a classic favorite.

- 1/2 cup neutral oil (canola)
- 1 package (16 oz / 454 g) tofu
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 1/4–1/3 cup water
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1/3–1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Sriracha (optional)
- 2 teaspoons crushed ginger
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
Instructions
- Press and pat dry the tofu, then break it into small 1-inch nuggets.
- In a bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, salt, and garlic powder. Add water gradually to make a runny batter.
- Coat tofu nuggets in the batter.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add tofu pieces and fry for 5-6 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Transfer fried tofu to a plate lined with paper towels.
- In a mixing bowl, combine sauce ingredients and stir. Pour into a skillet over medium heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add fried tofu to the sauce and mix until coated. Serve over rice.
Notes
For extra crunch, try double-frying the tofu. Adjust sweetness of the sauce as desired.
