About Me
Hi, I’m Emily Truett, If you ever find yourself wandering into my kitchen in West Lafayette, Indiana, chances are you’ll be greeted by the smell of something rising, roasting, or gently simmering away. I like to think of my kitchen as a crossroads, a place where old traditions meet new ideas and where curiosity is always welcome.
I wasn’t raised by professional chefs or surrounded by gourmet ingredients. My early food memories are humble but vivid: warm cornbread straight from the oven, my mom’s chicken soup with just the right amount of thyme, and holiday rolls that never quite made it to the table before someone snuck one. Cooking, for me, started as an act of love, then slowly became a creative obsession.
I created Tasty Trails as a space to share that love with recipes that feel as nourishing to make as they do to eat. What sets my kitchen apart is a quiet but deep affection for natural fermentation, especially wild yeast. There’s something incredibly grounding about cultivating a sourdough starter, watching it grow, and coaxing life into a simple mix of flour and water until it becomes something beautiful. But fermentation isn’t the only thing I care about. You’ll also find weeknight pastas, cozy soups, herby flatbreads, and spontaneous flavor experiments inspired by everything from farmers’ markets to late-night cravings.
I especially love helping beginners feel like they belong in the kitchen. I know how daunting it can be when a recipe looks too perfect or when you’re not sure what fold gently really means. That’s why everything I share is meant to be approachable, forgiving, and full of little tips I’ve learned the hard way. Messes are part of the journey. So are surprises.
Cooking, to me, is about slowing down and paying attention. It’s about noticing how the dough feels in your hands, how spices bloom in hot oil, how the people around your table seem to lean in just a little closer when something smells right. That’s the heart of what I try to share.
So whether you’re here to finally tackle sourdough or just want to make a good soup that doesn’t come from a can, I’m so glad you found your way to my little corner. Let’s roll up our sleeves, try new things, and most importantly, enjoy the trail.
