Description

Delightful twists filled with cinnamon and sugar, perfect for breakfast or as a sweet treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups milk (preferably not skim milk)
  • 1/4 cup room temperature water
  • 6 tablespoons butter, cut into tablespoon-size pieces
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant or active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 12 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk until tiny bubbles form around the edges and it’s steaming. Pour this into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook.
  2. Add the water, butter, and sugar, and let this cool until warm (an instant-read thermometer should read 110 to 115 degrees F).
  3. Combine 2 cups of the flour and sprinkle the yeast on top. Expect a thin mixture; cover the bowl and let it rest for 5-10 minutes until slightly puffy and bubbly.
  4. Stir in the egg and salt, then add the remaining flour gradually until the dough clears the sides of the bowl and forms a soft, sticky ball. Knead for 5-6 minutes until smooth.
  5. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size (about 45 to 60 minutes).
  6. Roll out to a 15X10-inch rectangle on a lightly greased countertop.
  7. Slice the dough in half lengthwise and then into 1 1/2-inch strips, yielding about 20 strips.
  8. Combine the brown sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish for the coating. Dip each strip into melted butter, then coat it in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  9. Twist each strip one or two times and place them on a greased sheet pan in two rows.
  10. Let the twists rise until noticeably puffy (about 30 to 45 minutes).
  11. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and bake for 20 to 22 minutes until lightly golden.
  12. Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla for the icing. Adjust consistency if needed.

Notes

Serve warm with icing drizzled on top or alongside for dipping. They can be enjoyed fresh or stored at room temperature for 1-2 days.
