  • 1 cup brown sugar (divided)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon (divided)
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your cake pan.
  2. Combine melted butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup flour, and 2 teaspoons cinnamon in a small bowl, then mix in chopped pecans.
  3. Beat together softened butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, granulated sugar, and eggs in another bowl until creamy.
  4. Stir in vanilla extract, sour cream, sourdough starter, and buttermilk until well combined.
  5. Whisk together fine sea salt, baking powder, and 2 cups flour in a separate bowl.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined.
  7. Spread half of the batter into the prepared pan, then sprinkle with half of the cinnamon-sugar filling.
  8. Top with the remaining batter and sprinkle with the remaining filling and crumble topping.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Let it cool before serving.

Notes

Serve with fresh fruit or a drizzle of honey for an extra touch. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
